What to watch on VOKA during holiday season: five hit movies in Belarusian
During winter holidays one feels like spending as much time as possible with the loved ones in a cozy ambience. On the eve of the big weekend VOKA selected a few new uploads in the section CINEVOKA, i.e. five popular world films that one wants to watch over and over again that are now available also in the Belarusian language.
Hachiko (A Dog's Tale)
One day a college professor finds a puppy on a train station platform and takes it home. From this day begins a touching story of a friendship and loyalty.
The film is an American remake of the Japanese film Hachiko Monogatari (1987) which gained worldwide fame and became more widely recognized precisely due to Hollywood adaptation. The roles of Professor Kane and his wife were played by Richard Geer and Joan Allen.
The main character is Christian Wolfe, a certified accountant with autism who makes a living by keeping books for criminal organizations around the world. The agents who run his case are trying to find out who he really is and what secrets he’s keeping. The character portrayed by Ben Affleck is inspired by the stories of several real people.
Weathering with You (Tenki no ko)
16-year-old schoolboy Khodak Morishima flees from his provincial town in Tokyo. There he meets Hina Amano, an orphan girl who has an amazing ability to disperse clouds and stop rain. Together they start a business and take orders for good weather.
The film’s director and screenwriter is Makoto Shinkai, known for his previous successful animated film Your Name (Kimi no Na wa), which has become one of the highest-grossing anime in history. Every frame of the film is a real work of art. It is therefore logical that the film received many professional awards and nominations including recognition at various film festivals and high acclaim from film critics.
The Man Who Invented Christmas
The film is inspired by Leslie Brikaus' book The Man Who Invented Christmas. The extraordinary journey of a famous writer which led Charles Dickens to create his famous work Christmas Song. Eternal fairy tale which helped many people to see Christmas from a new perspective. The role of Dickens was performed by the star of Abbey of Downton Dan Stevens.
The film successfully recreates the atmosphere of the Victorian era reflecting details of the everyday life and creative environment of the time. It also raises the question of the importance of the Christmas spirit presenting it as a force capable of inspiring and changing people’s lives.
One Day
After graduation Dexter and Emma agree to stay friends and meet every year on 15th July, the day of their graduation. Time passes, everyone has his own life, but they do not break tradition and try to keep friendship or even something more. The film received critical acclaim for its characters, script and chemistry between the cast: Jim Sturgis and Ann Hathaway. You can see the picture in the Belarusian voiceover starting from 29th December.
