At the second stage of the introduction of RAN Sharing technology, A1 improved the operation of its network in more than 500 Belarusian localities

About Company

А1 has completed the second stage of the project to expand its network using RAN Sharing technology. During the peak summer season, the mobile quality and Internet speed have improved significantly in hundreds of localities across the country.

For half a year, 162 base stations were included in the A1 network across Belarus: subscribers of more than 500 localities can notice a significant communication improvement. Most of the towers are located in the Brest, Vitebsk and Grodno regions, as well as along the main highways of the country. The changes will especially be noticeable in places where the load on the network typically increases significantly during the summer season.

With the RAN Sharing technology, the capacity and quality of the A1 3G network were increased in the shortest possible time and with minimal labour costs – still, without the construction of new base stations. Its essence aims at the joint use of radio access networks by different companies rendering mobile communication services. Due to shared access, the full cycle of launching new capacities is reduced from years to months.

The introduction of RAN Sharing technology began at the end of 2022. Since then, the operation of the A1 network has been improved in more than a thousand Belarusian localities.

900 MHz was selected as the operating range for the use of RAN Sharing technology: base stations operating at these frequencies provide a longer range and better penetration of the radio signal. This allows for high-quality communications in both difficult terrain and high-density areas.

As per the schedule, the next stage of the project on the introduction of RAN Sharing technology will be implemented in the first half of 2024.
