velcom announces the commercial launch of 3G on the base of UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ technology Minsk-Gomel March 17, 2010 – velcom officially announced the commercial launch of UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ in Minsk and Gomel. As of March 18, new tariff plans for data transmission recommended for 3G will be available to velcom subscribers.
– Today, with the commercial launch of the 3G network we open a new stage in velcom’s activity on the telecommunications market of Belarus, – noted Helmut Duhs, Chief Executive Officer of SB Telecom Ltd. on issues of FE “VELCOM”. – We have fulfilled the promises given to our subscribers in December last year. UMTS network with HSPA/HSPA+ data transmission technology in Minsk and Gomel has been rolled out for less than three months. Such high pace has been possible thanks to the huge preliminary work on complex modernization of transport networks, replacement of the switchboard equipment and R4 Architecture implementation. Also, with a great responsibility we approached the choice of the suppliers and vendors for our work.
After 3G launch, alongside with the standard offers of the operator, subscribers will receive high speeds of data transmission with HSPA/HSPA+ technology, ability to make video calls and use video services.

3G network and video call services are automatically provided to all velcom subscribers – it is enough to have a handset supporting 3G (UMTS) standard, to be in the 3G network coverage area and to switch a UMTS or a double GSM/UMTS mode. “Mobile internet” service is automatically assigned to all new velcom subscribers as well as active subscribers upon a tariff plan change if this service was not activated before. velcom subscribers can also activate “Mobile internet” on their own by sending a USSD-request 135*1# and send button or using internet service for subscribers support on the company sitehttps://internet.velcom.by.
3G velcom services are available for the subscribers in the capital and in Gomel. By the end of the year the coverage will be extended to regional centers and big towns.
